Our Co-op

We acknowledge that the land on which we dwell is the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People.

ABIWIN (an Algonquin word for dwelling) is a non-profit housing co-operative located in the heart of Centretown on Somerset St. W., between Metcalfe and O'Connor. Our unique housing cooperative consists of four renovated heritage buildings, three infill garden and stacked town homes, and a six-story mid-rise. Construction was completed in November 1986. In total we have 90 units, varying from one to four bedrooms, with 14 being wheelchair accessible. Abiwin is within easy walking distance of two grocery stores, many restaurants, the Rideau Canal, the National Arts Centre, The Canadian Museum of Nature, the YMCA, Jack Purcell Community Centre, and the Byward Market.

Abiwin Co-op was founded by a group of LGBTQ2+ Centretown residents who believed that a housing project with a co-operative structure could create:

  • affordable, non-profit and non-speculative housing in downtown Ottawa;
  • housing with security of tenure for its residents;
  • a sense of community in the core of the city;
  • and a tolerant community, free from all kinds of discrimination.

These are the values that our members continue to strive for.
